Golden State Warriors vs. Phoenix Suns
Thursday, January 28, 2021 – 10:00 PM EST at PHX Arena
As you may have noticed, it’s been harder to get early NBA odds these days. Coronavirus testing and protocols have made it very difficult to post overnight lines – the most profitable lines you can find for straight bets if you hit the betting market before the sharps mess things up. But lo and behold, we have early odds for Thursday’s game between the Golden State Warriors (10-8 SU, 9-9 ATS) and the Phoenix Suns (8-8 SU and ATS), and that’s despite both teams also being in action Wednesday night. Splendid.

What to do about these odds is another matter. Golden State opened as 1-point road faves at BetOnline before moving to +1, so it looks like the sharps are fading the Dubs on zero days of rest, plus the trip from San Francisco to Phoenix. They may be right; FiveThirtyEight project the Suns to win this matchup by 7.5 points. Wait, what?! Either there’s something wrong with Nate Silver’s computers, or we definitely need to put Phoenix in our NBA picks.
Super Dario World Okay, I suppose both things could be true – watch out for those false binary choices now. But we may have found the culprit: Devin Booker (minus-1.9 BPM), the leading scorer for the Suns at 23.0 points per 36 minutes, is out after straining his left hamstring last Friday. FiveThirtyEight’s RAPTOR formula is supposed to account for injuries, though. Hmmm. Ah, this must be it: Dario Saric (minus-2.0 BPM) and Damian Jones (minus-7.8 BPM) both sat out Wednesday’s game against the Oklahoma City Thunder because of league protocols. But this isn’t exactly news. Saric hasn’t played since January 18, and Jones barely gets off the bench as it is. We’re not sure if Saric will be cleared for Thursday, but neither of these gentlemen should have much effect on the projections or the NBA lines.
There’s the Beef
Maybe Golden State’s recent lineup shuffle has thrown the computers/betting market off. Head coach Steve Kerr decided to promote veteran wide-body Kevon Looney (minus-1.7 BPM) to the starting lineup ahead of rookie beanpole James Wiseman (minus-4.1 BPM), and that move paid instant dividends on Monday when the Warriors beat the Minnesota Timberwolves 130-108 as 8.5-point home faves. Wiseman’s got tons of talent, but with the Dubs back in playoff contention, they have to tighten the reins a bit. Anyway, at the end of the day, Golden State did it to the Wolves again in their second game, winning 123-111 as 9-point favorites, while the Suns (–8 at home) fell 102-97 to Oklahoma City.
Do we really want to bet on the Suns in this situation? They’ve dropped five of their last six SU and ATS, and we’re now getting word that Saric probably won’t return until the weekend... let’s just bail and put a small sum on the Under. With both teams playing the second of back-to-back games, people will be tired, and the Suns (Under 10-6) do have one of the slowest offenses in the NBA. Maybe they’ll be even slower Thursday night.

Golden State Warriors Vs Okc Predictions Bleacher Report
The Golden State Warriors and the Phoenix Suns collide at the PHX Arena on Thursday night.
The Golden State Warriors have been in a bit of a rut as they’ve lost four of their last seven games and they will be hoping to avoid a third straight defeat after last night’s 108-106 road loss to the Trailblazers. Stephen Curry led the team with 35 points and five assists, Andrew Wiggins added 14 points while Kent Bazemore chipped in with 12 points. As a team, the Warriors shot just 42 percent from the field and 15 of 42 from the 3-point line as they looked to be in control after leading by six points late in the fourth quarter, until the final 1:42 where they went scoreless.
Meanwhile, the Phoenix Suns have been in terrific form lately as they’ve won 12 of their past 14 games and they will be gunning for a fourth straight victory after taking down the Lakers in a 114-104 road win on Tuesday. Dario Saric led the team in scoring with 21 points off the bench, Mikal Bridges added 19 points with five assists, while DeAndre Ayton and Devin Booker each scored 17 points. As a team, the Suns shot 49 percent from the field and 16 of 29 from the 3-point line as they led for most of the game, before pulling away in the fourth quarter after seeing their best player in Booker get ejected in the third quarter.
Looking at the betting trends, the Warriors are 6-17-1 ATS in their last 24 games playing on zero days’ rest and 1-4 ATS in their last five games against a team above .600. The Suns are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 home games, 21-5 ATS in their last 26 games against a team with a winning record and 35-16 ATS in their last 51 games overall.
Head to head, the under is 7-0 in the last seven meetings overall and the Warriors are 6-2 ATS in the last eight meetings in Phoenix.
The Warriors just haven’t been able to get out of their funk lately and they will be disappointed after dropping a game they should’ve won last night, while the Suns have been in great form and they are coming into this one with plenty of momentum after taking down the Lakers on Tuesday. This should be a close one, but I’m sticking with the Suns to stay hot here and claim another win.
